DIY lampshade upscale

I have been wanting to do this project for a long time now but I have only had the chance (and the guts) to do it just recently! My eldest son has moved into his big boys room in the last 6 months and the decor still resembles a guest bedroom rather than a 3 year olds. Up until now his bedside lamp has been black and boring...

I have had some gorgeous fabric that I got last christmas that I wanted to cover the shade with but have been to chicken to use it in case I ruin it! Originally I wanted to sew the fabric together but because I am still too afraid to get the sewing machine out, I used the good old Mod Podge instead and it worked a treat!

I used Moda Fabric Charm squares that are 5 inch x 5 inch in size.

I glued the first piece to the bottom of the lampshade. I left about a 2cm overhang so that I could glue that to the inside of the lampshade. Then I glued the next piece to the top of the lampshade also leaving the same overhang. The top piece of fabric overlapped the bottom piece by about 1cm.

I repeated this process the entire way around the lamp...

And this was the final result...

I was so pleased with how it turned out and reading stories at bedtime will be extra fun now!

  1. Hi Jessica! Your lamp looks fantastic! I love it! The fabrics are gorgeous :-) Can you explain to me what Moda Fabric Charm squares are? Is that just the name of the fabric you used or is it something else? I'd like to do something similar with some daggy lamp shades we have here! (found you via #IBOT) xo

    1. Thank you, I love the colours in it too... it is so hard to find funky fabric for boys I think! Moda Fabric is the brand of fabric and charm squares are what you can buy in packs that are grouped together in colour storyboards of the fabric i.e similar prints and colours but with slight variations. Does that make sense? I hope this helps :)

  2. Such a good idea! And it looks so cute!! How good is Mod Podge, you can use it for sooo much. I'm still afraid of the sewing machine too! I keep meaning to learn, but just never get around to it! You don't need to sew to craft!!

  4. What a fab idea! I was just thinking that I need a new lamp for my night stand. I'll have to have a go at this. This might be a dumb question, but where do I get Moda Fabric and some Mod Podge?

    1. Hi Grace, you can get Moda Frabic online just type it into google. Or should be able to get it (or another brand like it) at any good fabric store, even spotlight. YOu can get Mod Podge at craft and art shops! I hope this helps.

  10. Oh I love it! I did not know you would use Modge Podge on fabric. I have only ever used it with scrapbook papers. Great job.
